Many of our parishioners have asked questions about the new procedures for volunteers entitled “Shield the Vulnerable.” I understand the concerns, and I would like to offer some clarification. The Archdiocese’s new program mandates that all of our volunteers must register on a secure website by providing your name and contact information and accepting the terms of the Archdiocese’s Code of Conduct. (A lot of you have already completed this task, thankfully.)
Most of our volunteers will need to provide some additional information for a background check because of the frequency of young people around the parish plant. (The exceptions to this new norm are listed in the attached document.) I ask that we all view this new requirement as an opportunity to update ourselves “on being aware of the vulnerability of our youth and elderly.” Our parish needs to be a comfortable and safe place for everyone.
I ask that you please read with “close attention” the attached document on “Shield the Vulnerable.” If you volunteer here, please follow the instructions on document. If you need assistance or “are not too computer savvy” (like myself), please call Kelly Gibbons, our “Safe Environment Coordinator” here at St. Ignatius at 410-879-0959, and she will be glad to help you by inviting you in the office and walking you through the process. In addition, our Faith Formation Staff and my assistant, Fahey, or Ginger Barger, our Business Manager, will help you complete the requirements.
We want to make this as easy as we can and as convenient as possible. Our parish is a wonderful “Community of Faith,” and that’s because of your sharing of your gifts with us. I am so grateful for your spirit of volunteerism, and I thank you. Please know that we want to do whatever we can to support you in your service.
God Bless You,
Rev. Msgr. James M. Barker
